UNIVERSAL PLAYBACK ANNOUNCES DVD RELEASE OF SEASON ONE OF 80’S ACTION-PACKED CULT CLASSIC

IT WAS one of the fastest, glossiest and most enjoyable TV series of the 80s. Now to the delight of its legions of fans, Universal Playback is to release the first season of ‘Airwolf’ on DVD on 3rd April. Also featuring the thrilling two-hour pilot, the four-disc collection will be available at an rrp of £27.99.

Starring Jan-Michael Vincent and Ernest Borgnine, the Emmy Award-winning series follows the dangerous missions of a helicopter named Airwolf. Airwolf however is no ordinary chopper: it’s a billion-dollar, state-of-the-art killing machine armed with 14 deadly attack weapons. It’s also equipped with cutting edge surveillance equipment and a built-in jet turbine booster system, enabling it to fly at speeds close to Mach 2.

Created and executive produced by television veteran Donald P Bellisario, (Magnum, PI, Quantum Leap), ‘Airwolf’ boasted some of the highest production values ever seen in television history, alongside spectacular aerial photography, gripping plotlines and great acting from both cast regulars and well-known guest-stars such as David Hemmings (Gladiator), Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills 90210, Charmed) and David Carradine (Kill Bill).

Airwolf's first season cleverly developed the series' dark take on Cold War espionage in which the Libyans and Russians were portrayed as the scheming villains, while US covert intelligence (known as The Firm) were the good guys.

It is The Firm that has developed Airwolf in order to give America the definitive edge in air assault. But when Airwolf's designer steals the helicopter, blows up The Firm's HQ, and bolts to Libya, there’s only one man who can clean up the mess: Stringfellow Hawke (Jan-Michael Vincent).

Hawke agrees to recover Airwolf, on the condition that The Firm helps find his brother, St John, who has been missing in Vietnam for over a decade.

With his best friend and co-pilot Dominic Santini (Ernest Borgnine), Hawke recaptures the super-aircraft. Instead of returning it to the government however, he hides it, using it as leverage until the CIA locates St John.

The series kicks off with the awe-inspiring, movie-length "Shadow of the Hawke," featuring Hawke's fiery showdown with Airwolf's psychotic creator, Charles Henry Moffett (David Hemmings), in the Libyan Desert.
