Three Kings on DVD Review | Movie / Film

I had seen quite a lot of positive reviews of this film so I was looking forward to watching it. Was I disappointed? Well a little, but it was still an enjoyable movie. The story follows the exploits of four US Soldiers at the end of the Gulf War. They come across a map that they believe leads to stolen Kuwaiti Gold and they decide to take home a little momentum of their visit. The story develops further as they become entwined in the conflict between Sadams soldiers and the Iraqi uprising.

I think one of the films saving graces are the regular moments of humor that stop you losing interest in the main storyline. I also liked the way that the film doesn't portray America as the great Gulf War hero and implies that the war was more about oil then human suffering.

I could see no problems with the picture quality on this disc, no sign of any digital artifacts. It is however quite difficult to comment on the picture because they used so many tricks on the film stock to convey a certain environment. There are some interesting details on this on the disks extras.

There's Nothing to complain about on the audio side. The DD 5.1 soundtrack sounded excellent on my setup. Explosions boomed and I almost ducked as fragments of cow flew past my ears. The sounds of bullets hitting people is disturbingly effective. The dialogue is clear too and is never drowned out by the other sound effects.

This disk is packed with extras. There are two separate commentary tracks, one from the director David O.Russel and one from producers Charles Roven and Ed McDonnel. There's a behind the scenes documentary, a video journal from the director, and interview with the director of photography, a look at the acting process with Ice Cube and more. I'm still wading through the extras myself. They will keep you busy for a while.

I did enjoy this film although it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Should you buy it? If you've seen it and like it then the disk is a must have due to the wealth of extras. If not then I'd recommend renting it first and then deciding.
