The X-Files: Season 7 Box Set on DVD Review | Movie / Film

It’s been a long time since I watched The X-files, so it was with some trepidation that I sat down to watch 23 hours of Season 7. My worries were groundless. I quickly became engrossed in the strange goings on investigated by Mulder and Scully of the FBI. The acting is so good that it's easy to get caught up in each episode. The chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson is still there, despite rumours that they don't get on too well nowadays.

This box-set contains 6 disks containing every episode from Season 7. I will only comment on those that I enjoyed the most, but it should not be inferred that the others weren’t very good, though as with all series that have run for this long, there are hits and misses.

This is the entire list of episodes. 'The Sixth Extinction', 'The Sixth Extinction II: Amor Fati', 'Hungry', 'Millennium', 'Rush', , 'Orison', 'The Amazing Maleeni', 'Signs And Wonders', 'Sein Und Zeit', 'Closure', 'X-Cops', 'First Person Shooter', 'En Ami', 'Chimera', 'All Things', 'Brand X', 'Hollywood A.D.', 'Fight Club', 'Je Souhaite' and 'Requiem'

'The Sixth Extinction',
'The Sixth Extinction II:
The first two episodes carry on from happenings in Season 6, which I didn’t see, but I was still able to pick up the slack. Mulder is in a coma brought on by being overloaded with powers of ESP, and Scully is somewhere in Africa, trying to find a cure for him among what appear to be relics of a spacecraft containing writings from the bible, the koran and other religious texts. It is all very biblical and there are plagues of locusts, seas boiling and dead Africans appearing to Scully. The Smoking Man (Spender) begins to control Mulder’s mind, and Scully has to race home to save Mulder before Spender performs a life-threatening operation to give himself the same powers.

'Hungry',
In this episode someone or something is sucking the brains out of people. What I liked about this episode is that the audience is allowed to build up sympathy with the perpetrator. It is clearly an allegory of eating disorders, and suggests the compulsion that leads some people to stuff their faces, despite knowing that their actions are dangerous to them (though eating a whole tub of ice cream isn’t nearly as dangerous as sucking another person’s brains out!)

'Millennium',
My personal favourite, because it stars Lance Henrikson (yum yum) as Frank Black. This story ends the tale that the series Millenium began. Dead men are being risen from their graves, while our Frank is locked up in a mental home (for some reason he thinks this will convince the courts that he is a proper guardian for his daughter). It is up to Mulder and Scully to make our Frank fight against the forces when he has all but given up. My only quibble is that, if things had turned out as planned, Frank wouldn’t have been with his beloved daughter when the world ended. He’d have been in the asylum.

Rush',
This is a bit like Final Destination/Scream/any other teen fright movie you care to name, meets X-files. Teenagers have found a way to make their bodies move faster, but one teenager uses this for evil purposes, unaware that his body is collapsing under the strain.

'The Goldberg Variation'
One of X-files more amusing episodes, but with a sentimental message. A man appears to have immense luck. Unfortunately, when he is lucky, others become unlucky. A sort of balance in the universe. Mulder and Scully are brought in when the man is thrown from a towerscraper by members of the mob, then survives.

'Orison',
A serial killer who (apparently) messed up Scully’s mind a few series ago, returns to kill again. His speciality is cutting off women’s fingers and eating them (ugh!). He is pursued by a priest, who believes that he has been given a mission from God to remove such evil from the world. Unfortunately the well-meaning priest causes more problems than he intended.

'Signs And Wonders',
One of X-files darkly religious episodes. A young man is bitten to death by snakes, and the pastor at his old church is suspected. However, all is not what it seems (it never is in X-files!)

'Closure',
This episode finally puts to rest the mystery of what happened to Mulder’s sister. It is part of a story arc that will eventually lead to an end to the Smoking Man.

Cops',
Scully and Mulder are accidentally caught up in an episode of Cops, when they’re investigating what appears to be a werewolf in LA. Amusing and scary in turns

'First Person Shooter',
A computer game comes dangerously to life, killing people in the process. Can Mulder and Scully stop it before more people die? (what do you think?

'En Ami',
This episode shows a softer side to The Smoking Man, as he begins to fall in love with Scully. However, she is right not to trust him … or is she?

So those were my particular favourites. One I wasn’t so keen on was Hollywood AD, which starred David Duchovny’s wife, Tea Leoni. It was all too silly, especially the zombies that arose on a movie set at the end, and danced (?). However, I enjoyed it all enough to ask if I can review Season 9. It will be interesting to see how they get on without Mulder.
