The Simpsons, Gone Wild on DVD Review | Movie / Film

Can you hear the sound of barrels being scraped? That’s how I felt watching this collection of four Simpsons episodes, and I’m a huge Simpsons fan so it’s sad for me to say it. Perhaps I’m being a little unfair as I did watch these right on the heels of M*A*S*H which takes some beating for sheer quality of writing and acting ability. But no. I can’t make any excuses. The Simpsons have had their share of biting satire and classic episodes. Unfortunately none of them are on this tape, which carries the subtitle ‘Gone Wild’. What that alludes to is still a mystery, as there is nothing to connect the episodes shown. This was one of the lamest collections of Simpsons cartoons ever, not to mention the Krusty special ‘featurette’.

Homer's Night Out,
When Bart receives a mail-order spy camera, he takes pictures of everything in sight, including Homer, who is dancing with a lapdancer at a bachelor party (I forget how Bart got there). Marge is furious when the picture is photocopied and shown around the town, so insists Homer takes Bart to apologise to the dancing girl involved. It involves a trip around all the ‘girlie’ joints in Springfield. Mildly funny.

Sunday Cruddy Sunday,
Maybe this one went over my head because it was about the Superbowl, which is essentially an American institution. Homer and a travel agent friend arrange a coach trip to the Superbowl and …er…that’s it really. All the jokes are about baseball (rounders to us Brits…). Oh and Marge and Lisa paint eggs… Went over my head.

The Mansion Family
The Simpsons are asked to housesit for Burns when he goes for his annual check up. Being a ‘billionaire by proxy’ goes to Homer’s head, and when he can’t get Moe to serve him drinks before opening time, he takes Burns’ boat out to international waters, where it’s hijacked by Pirates. Probably the funniest of them all, but that’s not saying much.

Homer The Moe

Moe goes back to bartending school, leaving Homer in charge of Moe’s Tavern. When Moe returns he turns the Tavern into a pretentious cocktail bar, barring Homer and his regular drinkers. Homer retaliates by setting up a bar in his garage and fooling REM into playing. Another hit and miss affair.

Krusty Featurette
A dire selection of Krusty’s best … er … jokes. Which only proved that Krusty the Klown is not very funny on his own, and only appears so in the context of what else happens in Springfield.

This is certainly not as good as The Simpsons Greatest Hits, which I reviewed recently. I got the impression that the producers thought ‘Let’s put the left over episodes together and make more money’. They’re letting the loyal fans down with this collection.

Of course, if you are a fan, you'll buy this anyway. Just don't watch old episodes of M*A*S*H first!
