The Best of One Foot In The Grave
One Foot in The Grave is one of my favourite all time shows; it was a sublime example of where casting and script worked perfectly. One Foot in The Grave is one of my favourite all time shows; it was a sublime example of where casting and script worked perfectly. Victor and his tantrums, his long suffering wife, the world conspiring against him. Although this show had many things which were slightly unbelievable, there was a logic which underpinned the whole show. David Renwick wrote such superb material, and again, this probably finished about the right time.
As an example of the show, this disk is brilliant. All right, you don't have all that many extras on here, but who needs them when you have material like this as the main feature? There's six episodes on here, including the haunting last episode where Victor had died. There's the one where Margaret disappears. Victor is on Jury duty and ends up in the dock. Grampie Meldrews' skull and the snake. There's the light and shade which gave the show the opportunity to be dramatic; to dare to go five minutes without a laugh is a big thing, but here it is effortless.
Rightly of wrongly, this is just six episodes and a short documentary on the series. It would not be possible to select everything truly great from this series, simply because it would be a disc about three days long. An excellent disc from the days before My Hero and My Family were hailed as sitcom legends.
