I am terrific fan of the Simpsons. The almost iconic status they have accrued over the years has been something both deserved and possibly overdue in their genre. It is sad then, that Fox chooses to cash in on the show like this; Already having released the boxed Simpson sets, and all the other Simpsons DVD series, they now drop any pretence of offering fans something new ; this is possibly the laziest set of DVDs, the Simpson classics. True, there are the classic episodes on Simpsons Against the World. Homer and the Eighth Commandment sees Homer first in ancient times as a thief being thwarted by Moses and those pesky tablets, then Lisa having to deal with her conscience as the family enjoy 'free' pay TV. Marge and the monorail sees Marge as the sole voice against the onset of technology and the dodgy monorail. Bart causes trouble in Australia with a dodgy international prank call and has to go and apologise and Homer has more problems with Patty and Selma in Homer Vs Patty and Selma.
What's lacking here is anything new. Surely there are people out there who would like something a little more than a DVD of the endlessly repeated episodes from the classic years of the series? Surely there would be something in a bit of extra effort, something to draw people in? No. The only thing on these disks are the the episodes themselves, and a scene selection. There is, by way of meeting halfway, a trailer option on each episode, but this doesn't really, for me at least, cut the mustard.
The Simpsons has given a great many people a reason to get satellite; for a while it was the benchmark and Zenith of cartoon comedy; this doesn't mean the fan base or material is inexhaustible. It simply means the shows are, when on their game, classic comedy and original invention.
As a package for under a tenner, they do offer a bargain basement entertainment ; but there is a limit as to how far four episodes on one disk will entertain and the question of how long they remain fresh remains, as does the question of the interval required to be entertained by repeat viewing. In my opinion, it would not have hurt Fox to put two more episodes on the disks.
All this being said, if it's just classic Simpsons episodes you want, and your satellite/cable is not working, then this'll probably do ya ; but the feeling something is missing does prevail slightly.
