Simpsons, The - Greatist Hits on DVD Review | Movie / Film

It’s impossible to get bored with The Simpsons, no matter how many times Sky One repeats episodes. There is always something new to laugh at on each showing This DVD proves that. My daughter and I chuckled all the way through, and more than once said ‘I don’t remember that bit’.

The DVD contains five Simpsons episodes:

Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire - 1st episode - Homer fails to get a Christmas bonus and Marge has to spend the Christmas money on getting a tattoo removed from Bart's arm. Homer has no alternative but to train in Santa school. This episode heralds the arrival of that scrappy mutt, Santa's Little Helper. There are some nice little social comments, such as when Bart says 'if TV has taught me anything it's that poor kids always end up having a good Christmas'.

Sweet Seymour's Baddass Song - 100th episode - Seymour is fired from Springfield Elimentary, leaving Ned Flanders in charge. Bart realises he misses his nemesis, and plots to get Seymour his job back. Again there as some nice little asides that you may miss the first time around. In this one, it was when Seymour is in the army, and accidentally has his men fire rounds towards the Kwik-e-Mart, which has just had new petrol pumps installed. There's no explosion but when Seymour and Bart are chatting a giant K drops into the background. Classic.

Trash of the Titans 200th Episode – Homer upsets the trash men, leading to him taking on the sanitation department, to the point that he’s running it. He begins the initiative ‘Can’t somebody else do it?’ and almost bankrupts the council in the process. He comes up with a money making scheme, allowing big cities to dump their trash in a landfill underneath Springfield. This episode features a guest appearance by U2, and has a wonderful social comment at the end, as a Native American weeps to see the landfill that has forced Springfield to move to another location.

Bart Gets and F Best rated episode - Bart learns that if he fails his history test, he has to stay in the 8th grade. Desperate, he wishes for divine intervention and God sends a 'snow day'. Can Bart study for his history test while everyone else is out enjoying themselves? Not one of my favourite episodes. I always prefer those that concentrate on Homer or Lisa.

Lisa's First Word - Homer tells the kids the story of Lisa's first word, and it is revealed that Bart hated his baby sister when she arrived, as a child prodigy, to steal his thunder. As usual the writers avoid sentimentality and though it's revealed Lisa's first word was 'Bart', because she adored her big brother, it still ends with the two kids trying to kill each other!

For me it is the voices of The Simpsons that make the shows what they are. Yes, the animation is good, but without the voice talents of the various Simpson ‘actors’ it wouldn’t work. I gather they’ve just argued for more money. Whatever they’re paying them, it’s not enough!

Not much in the way of extras on this DVD. There are subtitles, scene selection and the original trailers, but no short documentaries on how the shows are put together. Then again, who needs them? The cartoons stand very well alone.

No matter how many times fans have seen these, they’ll want to see them again and again.
