The Plot:
The Simone name is short for Simulation One and is the brain child of a Computer Software Engineer called Hank who dies for his cause, basically because he spend 8 years of his life camped in front of a computer screen. The cause of his cancer of the eye is put down to radiation from the VDU monitor(The story starts here just before he dies). Viktor Taransky is a struggling director who has had 3 of his last films fail, this his latest film find his star actress walk off screen. This is where Hank is his savour, he leaves Taransky, a director who Hank admired for his work in his Will the digitised Simulation One project disk that was designed to replace human actors with digitised computer ones. This is perfect for Taransky as he can use this computer generated actor because he can't find another reputable one to work with him.
When I saw this film I had seem a few bad reviews so I was getting ready to be disappointed. I have to say I felt quite the opposite, I really enjoyed it. The concept was original and well constructed. I have read comments from reviews saying they didn't really go into any technical aspects of how Taransky put the character in his films. My opinion is the film would have been 3 hours long if they had done that and strayed away from the story itself they were trying to tell so I think it was the right to keep it non technical and to the point.
The film has interesting twists and keeps you guessing how Taransky is going to deal with the public wanting to see the real Simone that of course in computer generated. There are some really entertaining parts in the film too. It is not an in your face humour so you have to look for it. The films deal with people's perception of how they worship something that does not really exist, it is in a made up world. Which of course can be liked to Hollywood actors, in real life they are not the same as the big screen parts they play?
There are some well played roles, notably by the legendary Al Pacino as the director Taransky and the model that plays Simone, Rachel Roberts fits well in to her role. Also the two journalists that are trying to hunt for the real Simone are worthy of a mention as they help the film's comedy side.
Comments on the DVD disk:
Well the quality of the video was excellent; it is in 2.35:1 anamorphic screen display, well defined colours. The sound is well covered also it has a choice of DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1 or 6.1 EX if you have the equipment to use it. Again no problems here and it is well mixed all be not tested to full as not an action type film.
To sum up I think the film is worthy of a high score as it I found it was entertaining and worth adding to any collection.
