Rain Man
I remember first watching this film in the cinema when it was first released. Although I was still a teenager back then the film still moved me and remained as one of those films that you just don’t forget.

Plot
Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is a young self-confident entrepreneur. When his father (whom he hasn’t seen since he walked out years before) dies, he discovers that the entire estate (excluding a car) has been left in a trust fund. He finds out that the fund is for an autistic savant brother that he never new he had.
In an effort to get half the money he takes his brother Raymond Babbit (Dustin Hoffman) out of care and they set out on a journey across the country by car. On the road trip Charlie begins a journey of discovery with his brother and eventually realises there’s more at stake then just some money.
Video / Audio
In the opening shots the film looks very grainy and I assumed that it would be like this all the way through. This soon goes however and your left with a satisfactory, if not mind blowing picture. There are some quite grainy places throughout the film and a few scratches noticeable but you have to remember the age of the film. The film is presented in a 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen format.
Although this has been remixed into Dolby Digital 5.1 format don’t expect too many surround effects. This is not because there’s anything wrong with the mix it’s just that it’s an extremely dialogue heavy film. When the channels are used however they are used effectively.
Extras
This is pretty much a film only release. The only extras here are a Theatrical Trailer, a set of trailers for other movies and an eight-page booklet.
Overall
What can I say about this film, it is a timeless classic. Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal of an autistic savant is one of the best roles I’ve ever seen performed in a film and he more than deserved the Oscar he got for it. Tom Cruise also demonstrates the acting he is capable of when given the right role. He portrays the development from selfish egotist to loving brother well.
Everything about this film is done well, from the compelling plot and the strong directing to the superb acting. Some of the scenes like the dancing scene are very moving and the plot has enough light-hearted moments to break up the seriousness of the film.
If you’ve never scene the film that I can highly recommend the disk. If you have seen it however then it depends on how much of a fan you are. There are no extras to tempt you in but if you want the film then there’s currently no better format to get it on.
