Nightmare On Elm Street, A on DVD Review | Movie / Film

This movie is famous first for the incarnation of Freddie, who has appeared in this movie, but in many sequels (played always by the show stealing Robert Englund, who may reprise his role, in a rumoured Jason Vs Freddie movie).

(Initial)

This movie is famous first for the incarnation of Freddie, who has appeared in this movie, but in many sequels (played always by the show stealing Robert Englund, who may reprise his role, in a rumoured Jason Vs Freddie movie). And secondly for the debut of Johnny Depp.

(Movie)

CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC!! This is no ordinary horror, it is ground breaking. Wes Craven now better known for the Scream Trilogy, created a legendary character. Why legendary you ask, well it's a baddy with a character, not your usual 2D crap, but a character you can love, as well as love to hate. Based on half a true story, the story tells of teenagers who mysteriously start to die in their nightmares, all because of Freddy Krueger. When parents ignore what's going on it comes down to a
group of teenagers, not only to show the truth but to survive. This is Craven at his sick and twisted best. While horrors do not have the same impact, as they use to, this movie is exciting, scary, funny and witty. All these emotions help this movie to be what I said at the start - CLASSIC. (Special note are the sequels while none better the original, if you enjoy this movie I recommend you watch the third one, as well as Wes Cravens New Nightmare - the last sequel so far).

(Picture)

This is a 1984, not that you could tell, it has been digitally remastered, and wow the movie has not looked as good. The dark sequences are vibrant and rich, cracking job. It is 1.85:1, but I don't think its anamorphic, nothing to say on the box if it is. Also you can watch a full screen version. - 4.5/5

(Sound)

5.1 baby, cool now you can hear Freddy from all corners of your room. Interestingly there is a mono track, as this was the track when the film was released in 1984. That is a nice touch for hardcore fans, hey it's a DVD why not have a few choices.

(Extras)

Anyone who knows about laserdisc, and owned this movie, will instantly recognize the commentary, as it has been lifted straight from it. That's no criticism as it is a good commentary; it is with Craven, and stars Paxton and Langenkamp, as well as the Director of Photography. You also get a trailer, and a section where you can jump to one of the kids nightmares. (Where's an interview with Freddy, oh well). There also DVD ROM features, including reading the screenplay as you watch the movie, a link to the website (which has cool Freddy stuff) and a trivia game. The feature list is below average if you cannot use DVD ROM, but if you have - enjoy, as a bit work appears to gone into it. It would be too easy to criticise the extras the real job is done in the wonderful remastering , and least there is a decent commentary.

(Overall)

Classic movie, superb transfer and a few extras, buy it, and don't forget to pray to God, to keep your soul while you sleep. (NB The copy I reviewed is region 1, but from what I have heard the region 2 is exactly the same).
