Honey on DVD Review | Movie / Film

I have watched this twice. I can't make up my mind whether it's an honest attempt to showcase new talent and broaden an actresses' perceived range, or simply rather a lazy film. It focusses on Honey Daniels, played by Jessica Alba.

I have watched this twice. I can't make up my mind whether it's an honest attempt to showcase new talent and broaden an actresses' perceived range, or simply rather a lazy film. It focusses on Honey Daniels, played by Jessica Alba. Honey, is, as you may expect, a dancer. It wouldn't work if she was in construction or motorway maintenance; hold on, construction; that worked in Flashdance! Yes, I know where I have seen this formula before. Dancer attempts to make it big, girl from the Ghetto, talent wins out. Sadly, talent does not win out, and the only thing out was me, to make possibly more coffees that is medically good for me. Though Alba is attractive and struts some mean stuff, it doesn't excuse the flimsy characterisation, lumbering plot or lame dialogue. Don't get me wrong; there are some nice touches in here. Alba borrowing moves from the 'hood', her characters' determination to be something on her own terms, the routines themselves. But this doesn't excuse the poor structure and lazy writing. Some of the characters seem to struggle to find a purpose, while others are condemned to mugging.

It's not a great film. It's probably not even rated as good, certainly not by me. I would have thought given Albas' profile a vehicle more worthy would have been found. It seems to want to capitalise on the Dark Angel strand rather than stand up in its' own right. Presumably the idea was to make Alba more of an actress than just a face from TV in a certain role. In my mind, it fails. It's a film which borrows heavily and never repays.

It is only saved by a good soundtrack. And if you can get the soundtrack, I'd suggest you go for that and save a few bob and 94 minutes of your life.
