Blade on DVD Review | Movie / Film

I’ve had this film around the house for quite some time, I didn’t really like the sound of it too much so I’ve been delaying reviewing it. The disk actually belongs to a fellow reviewer (Dug) and as he was asking for it back I thought I’d better get round to watching it and reviewing it, so here we are...

I’ve had this film around the house for quite some time, I didn’t really like the sound of it too much so I’ve been delaying reviewing it. The disk actually belongs to a fellow reviewer (Dug) and as he was asking for it back I thought I’d better get round to watching it and reviewing it, so here we are.

Plot

Blade is set in a world where Vampires live amongst humans (although most humans don’t know this). Blade (Wesley Snipes) was a child that was born to a women who had been bitten by a vampire. Because of this Blade is essentially human but possesses many vampire abilities such as super strength and the ability to regenerate his own body.

With the help of his mentor Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) Blade has become a Vampire Hunter. The main villain in the film is Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff). Frost has translated some ancient Vampire manuscripts that show how to resurrect the Blood God and finally allow the vampires to rule the humans. In order to raise the Blood God however he needs to use the blood of Blade.

Video / Audio

One thing I can say about this film is that both Video and Audio quality really are excellent. The picture is bright and sharp and I couldn’t see any sign of artefact's, film scratches etc. The film is presented in a 2.35:1 Widescreen Anamorphic format.

As you would expect with this type of Horror / Action film the soundtrack is very loud. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track gives every channel a good pounding particularly the LFE (Sub woofer) channel. If you like to keep the neighbours awake then this is a good disk to do it with.

Extras

This disk actually has quite a few extras. First up is an alternative ending called La Magra, this is a rather different ending to the one on the film. Next up there’s a section named designing Blade. We also have Cast & Crew Bios and a Theatrical Trailer. There’s also a section on behind the scenes footage. Finally there’s an audio commentary from Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff and various crew members.

Conclusion

I have to say that I didn’t think too much of this film. I’m not a big fan of no-brainer action films or excessive gore and this film is filled with both. The hero is too much of a no emotion tough guy with cheesy one-liners to boot. The bad guy is your typical all evil arch villain and the plot is totally obvious from beginning to end.

I will say that a few of the fighting scenes were quite impressive and very well choreographed. I would even go as far as to say that some of the close combat scenes I think rivalled the Matrix. The excessive use of gore in these scenes however spoilt the overall feel for me.

If you like your Hollywood no-brainers and plenty of blood and guts then I’m sure you’ll get more out of this film than I did. I however am only going to give it a very poor 2 out of 5. I would give it less but the Extras and Video/Audio quality raise the DVD itself up a little.
